Meet Capsule's newest crew member; Brand Communication Strategist, Dustin Studelska, PhD.

Dustin opens up about life, love and the pursuit of brands. Well... at least, two of the three.

What brings you to Capsule?

I flourish on a small, smart, collaborative team. And Capsule is quintessentially that! The opportunities embodied in a “special projects agency” are particularly intriguing to me, as I’m always looking for a new subject or method to explore.

Tell us about how you became interested in brand, design and communication.

My mother was an art teacher and is currently a fiber artist, so thinking about the form and function of the world around me was a prominent part of my upbringing. I also have a PhD in history and my dissertation subject intersects heavily with design history. To me, the choices and meaning that go into creating systems and objects will always be fascinating.

What experiences do you bring to Capsule?

I bring rigorous strategy, research and writing experience that I’ve honed over years of academic and branding work. My non-traditional marketing background means I bring a fresh, insightful perspective to brand and business problems that is both patient and penetrating. I also love making music, taking photographs and generally try to lead an observant and creative life.

On a scale of Jingle All the Way to Fargo, how Minnesotan is your accent?

I’m from Wisconsin, so not quite Minnesotan, but definitely in the ballpark. I say “uff da” frequently, if that counts.

We’re not going to judge or anything… but what’s your go to Karaoke song?

“Rebel Yell” by Billy Idol. Feel free to judge, I can take it.

Ramen or Sushi?

Ramen. I’m a soup guy. I love soup. Especially during soup season.

What brand is your dream client?

Leder Games, a board game design company in St. Paul, is doing some really thoughtful, innovative stuff in the board gaming world. It would be amazing to do work for them. Or really any of the game-makers in the Twin Cities. There are a bunch!

What’s your social security number?

I can’t remember…. I should write that down.

What’s your life motto?

“Be Prepared”

Any hidden talents you’re ready to expose?

I know a few pretty good magic tricks with a deck of cards.

Best SNL cast member of all time. Go.

Bill Hader.

How old do you think Tom Cruise actually is? Like really…

I don’t know, but he scares me.

What song will you never EVER skip?

“Burnin’ For You” by Blue Öyster Cult.

Scariest monster? Don’t say ghost. Mine is ghost.

An empty void. Infinite nothingness.
